Aggression is a great tool, however when working as a Law Enforcement Officer or Security Operative it can actually work against you when used as a ‘first approach’ to a situation.  In each IKFCQB seminar and in each training session we must practice aggressive methods and scenarios that will allow us to put the apprentice under pressure and move it from 0 to 100 in seconds.
The use of aggression in Self Defence and Tactical work is an important tool, but nothing more.
Amit Himelstein, Head Instructor commented:  “Aggression may allow me to move through techniques and free myself from bear hugs, attack opponents with hammer fists, headbutts and elbows in close range. The adrenaline gained from aggression, will reduce the impact of being thrown to the ground.”
Aggression is a tool that can be used effectively, however it has significant limitations, such as:
  • Timing of an attack, motivation for an attack and the choice of who will be the victim are all in the attackers hands.
  • An aggressive reaction will be very hard to produce and teach as my first reaction.
  • Awareness, balance and protocol based solution will be the right way to act.

Amit continues: “Aggression will be added as a tool that will push me out of the shock and place me through the stages of the defence. 
If working as a Law Enforcement Officer or Security Operative, aggression can work against you when used as a first approach to a situation. When in real danger and have lost control of the situation, sometimes real aggression is required in a fight to help you regain the positional advantage and to take back tactical control of the distance. Train smart, not just aggressive. It is vitally important to understand the difference between aggression, protocols, techniques and use them in proportion and appropriately or you may well find yourself being prosecuted.”
Those using aggression in self defence should appreciate its limitations and be very selective in its usage.
